Fort Johnson, known as Fort Polk until 2023, lies in western Louisiana and hosts the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC). Here units train under realistic conditions before they are deployed.
The terrain is flat and low-lying, with dense pine forests, swamps and heavy vegetation that severely limit visibility and freedom of movement. Precisely in this closed, swampy landscape, MGRS is the military standard for recording positions and movements, because it works reliably where landmarks are scarce and the terrain is hard to read. On this page you'll find the MGRS zone, terrain features and an interactive map and 3D view.
