The Grafenwöhr Training Area in Bavaria is, at over 230 square kilometres, one of the largest military training grounds in Europe and has been in use since 1910. Managed by the 7th Army Training Command, it is known for its extensive ranges and a large central impact area, ringed by pine forest and rolling hills.
Grafenwöhr is built for live-fire exercises with everything from infantry to tanks and artillery. In that kind of exercise, precise positioning is literally a matter of life and death: target and safety coordinates are exchanged in MGRS to rule out misunderstandings.
