Bergen-Hohne on the Lüneburg Heath (Lower Saxony) is, at nearly 285 square kilometres, one of the largest training areas in Europe and has been in use for more than a century. The vast heath landscape with sand flats and open impact areas, ringed by pine forest, is ideally suited to live-fire and manoeuvre exercises of the Bundeswehr and NATO partners.
The relief is gentle — elevations between roughly 40 and 150 metres — but the area is so large that coordinate discipline is indispensable for coordinating units and monitoring safety boundaries.
