The Baumholder Training Area in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate is one of the largest training areas the US Army has at its disposal in Europe. The expansive site combines dense live-fire ranges with open manoeuvre space and is used intensively for combat training at company and battalion level. American units shoot and train here year-round, often alongside allied forces.
The terrain is typical south-west German hill country: forested heights alternate with wooded slopes and narrow valleys, making relief a central planning factor.
