Why offline is essential
In mountain areas, forests, military training grounds, and international operation zones, mobile internet is unreliable or absent. A navigation tool that depends on an active connection is useless in these circumstances. MilMap is built with offline operation as a core feature.
How offline caching works
MilMap stores map tiles in the local cache of your device while you view a map area with an active connection. On the mobile app you can also actively download an area for offline use: zoom in on your operation area, open the menu, and choose 'Download area for offline'. Select the desired level of detail (higher detail = more storage space).
Routes and waypoints offline
All planned routes, waypoints, and map data are synchronised to your device whenever there is a connection. In offline mode these are fully available for navigation, editing, and reporting. Changes are synchronised once the connection is restored.
GPS always works
GPS position-finding via satellite works independently of the internet. Even without a data connection, MilMap knows exactly where you are, can calculate your direction to the next waypoint, and automatically detects arrival at checkpoints.
Offline weather data
Weather data does require an active connection to refresh. If you know you will be working without internet, refresh the weather data before departing. The most recent forecast remains available in the cache.
Field recommendation
Always download your map area before departure at maximum detail level. Export your route plans as PDF as a backup. Verify that all routes have been synchronised via the sync icon in the corner of the map view.
