What is GPX?

GPX (GPS Exchange Format) is an open XML format for storing GPS data: routes, tracks, and waypoints. It is the most widely used exchange format between navigation apps and GPS devices. Almost every device and app supports GPX.

Exporting from Garmin

On Garmin devices you save routes on the device. Via Garmin Express or Garmin Connect you can export these as GPX. On the device itself: go to Settings → Route Management → select the route → export to GPX on the SD card or via USB to your computer.

Exporting from TopoGPS

In TopoGPS: open your route → tap the share icon (square with upward arrow) → choose 'GPX file'. You can send the file directly to your email or save it in iCloud Drive or Google Drive for access via your computer.

Exporting from Komoot

In Komoot: open the tour → scroll down → click 'Export' → choose 'GPX file'. Komoot exports both the route and the elevation information in the GPX file.

Exporting from Strava

In Strava (web browser): open the activity → click the gear icon → 'Export GPX'. Note: Strava exports recorded tracks, not planned routes.

Importing into MilMap

In MilMap, go to your map and choose 'Import' from the menu. Select your GPX file. MilMap automatically converts all coordinates to MGRS format and recalculates distances and walking times based on your configured marching pace. After import you can edit the route, add or remove waypoints, and export a PDF directly.

Supported variants

MilMap supports GPX 1.0 and 1.1, including files with multiple routes and tracks at once. KML/KMZ (Google Maps/Earth), CSV, and GeoJSON are also supported.
