Why use Komoot routes?

Komoot has millions of user-generated and verified routes for hiking, MTB, road cycling, and more. The routes are optimised for the terrain type and include elevation information. By importing these routes into MilMap you add the operational layer that Komoot lacks.

Exporting a route from Komoot (web)

Go to komoot.com → log in → open the desired route → scroll to 'Export' in the sidebar → click 'GPX file'. Komoot exports the route including track points and elevation information. KML export is also available via the 'More' menu.

Exporting a route from Komoot (app)

Open the tour in the Komoot app → tap the 'More' menu (three dots) → 'Export' → 'GPX'. On iOS you can save the file via 'Files' or send it via email. On Android you can share it via the standard share function to a storage location of your choice.

Importing into MilMap

In MilMap: 'Import' → select the GPX file. Komoot routes often contain many track points (sometimes hundreds). MilMap offers the option to simplify the route: choose 'Optimise waypoints' to reduce the number of points to the essential points that define the route. This makes the route clearer for operational use.

Adjusting after import

After import you can fully customise the route: add extra waypoints (e.g. rest points, water, shelter), remove points, add MGRS coordinates to names, and set the equipment line for realistic time calculation. You then export as a PDF route book.
