Salisbury Plain in the English county of Wiltshire is the British Army's largest training area and, at nearly 400 square kilometres, one of the most extensive in Western Europe. It is an open chalk grassland with gentle undulations and dry valleys, where cover is scarce — a landscape that forces manoeuvre units to plan their movements carefully.
Because of its size and open character, accurate navigation on Salisbury Plain is essential: units disperse over great distances and stay in contact through shared coordinates. The British Army uses the British National Grid for this, but MGRS is the international equivalent for joint NATO exercises.
