Yakima Training Center lies in southern Washington State and is a vast US Army maneuver area in a semi-desert climate. Units from across the region use the terrain for large-scale exercises, live-fire series and close air support training.
The area consists of dry sagebrush steppe, rolling hills and open plains with significant elevation differences, making it suitable for a wide range of scenarios. In this sweeping, featureless landscape, MGRS is the military standard for recording positions and targets, because it works quickly and unambiguously without landmarks.
