De Haar is the training area on the south-west side of Assen, right next to the Johan Willem Friso Barracks. The compact terrain — some nine square kilometres of heath with forest edges — is used for infantry training, driver instruction and section- and platoon-level exercises. Its short distance from the barracks makes it the go-to ground for maintaining basic soldiering skills.
The flat Drenthe landscape offers few prominent features, so map and compass work make the difference here. MGRS is the standard for passing positions unambiguously. On this page you'll find De Haar's MGRS zone, terrain features and an interactive map with 3D view of the area.
