Where we stand now
Over the past ten years, digital navigation has evolved from a standalone GPS receiver with a blurry map to an integrated platform that plans routes, integrates weather data, analyses terrain, and generates operational reports. The next ten years promises an even greater leap.
AI-driven route optimisation
Artificial intelligence is going to fundamentally change route planning. Instead of manually placing waypoints, you describe your objective ("reach position X before 14:00 hours with minimal exposure to high ground") and AI generates multiple route options with pros and cons. This is already in early stages in some military applications, but will become more widely available.
Augmented reality navigation
AR glasses and headsets can project route overlays directly into the field of vision. Imagine: you are walking a mountain path and see directly through your glasses the direction to the next waypoint, the distance, and the expected weather visibility — without having to consult your phone. Companies like Microsoft (HoloLens) and various military technology companies are actively working on this.
Better satellite coverage
The European Galileo system is fully operational. Galileo offers sub-metre precision for consumers and centimetre precision for certified receivers. In combination with GPS and the Russian GLONASS system, accuracy in urban environments and canyons has greatly improved.
Mesh networks for offline communication
Devices such as Garmin inReach and the Meshtastic community are building mesh radio networks that allow teams to communicate without satellite or mobile network. Integration with navigation software makes team navigation possible in completely connectivity-free environments.
MilMap's roadmap
