Tactical map reading for beginners: from paper topography to digital

The basics: understanding map scale

A map scale of 1:25,000 means that 1 centimetre on the map equals 25,000 centimetres (250 metres) in reality. On a 1:50,000 map, 1 cm equals 500 metres. The smaller the scale number, the more detailed the map. For field navigation, 1:25,000 is the standard; for strategic planning, 1:50,000 or 1:100,000.

Reading contour lines

Contour lines connect points at equal elevation. Close together means steep slope; far apart means flat terrain. Contour lines bend in a V-shape upstream at valleys (watercourses follow the V-point) and bend in the opposite direction at ridges. Every fifth contour line is printed thicker — this is the index contour, with the elevation marked on it.

Recognising landmarks

Landmarks are prominent terrain features: a church tower, a road junction, a river meander, an isolated tree in a clearing. Always choose landmarks that are durable: a farmhouse will still be there in ten years, but a haystack may not be. In military context, we call these "terrain recognition features".

Understanding coordinates

Lat/lon coordinates are familiar but cumbersome in the field. MGRS (Military Grid Reference System) is more efficient: "31UCS87432154" gives a location accurate to ten metres in a format that is quick to communicate. MilMap displays MGRS by default, but easily switches to lat/lon or UTM.

From paper to digital

The transition from paper map to digital navigation goes more smoothly if you know the basic concepts. In MilMap you see the same contour lines as on the paper map — only interactive and combined with satellite imagery. The 3D terrain model translates the abstract contour lines into a visually understandable landscape. Start by planning routes on paper and then verify them digitally in MilMap.

Practical exercise

The best way to learn map reading is practice. Take a familiar hiking route, plot it in MilMap, and walk the route while following the map. Note at which points the digital map matches the terrain, and where it diverges. After ten kilometres of field experience, contour lines become second nature.
