Motorcycle navigation: different requirements than hiking
A motorcyclist has different priorities than a hiker or military unit. Twistiness and elevation changes are positives, not obstacles. But road quality, fuel availability, overnight options, and riding restrictions on certain roads are critical. MilMap's terrain analysis and waypoint system are excellently applicable to motorcycle routes.
Planning off-road motorcycle routes
For adventure motorcyclists (enduro, GS riders) the terrain profile is essential. MilMap's elevation profile shows elevation changes per kilometre. The 3D terrain view gives a visual picture of the passage type: is it a technical mountain path or a gravel road? Combine satellite imagery with the topographic layer for the best assessment of the riding surface.
Intermediate stops as waypoints
Add fuel stations, campsites, restaurants, and points of interest as waypoints. Use colour-coding: yellow for fuel, blue for overnight, green for rest break. On longer tours over remote terrain, never plan more than half your tank range between fuel stops. Add opening times in the waypoint description.
Coordinating group rides
For group rides, map coordination is essential. Export the route as GPX for each group member. Designate a permanent last rider who keeps an eye on all participants. Define assembly points every 50–80 km so the group stays together. In MilMap, assembly points are simple to add with a description and a distinctive name.
Weather integration for motorcyclists
Weather is more critical for motorcyclists than for car tourists. Integrate weather data in your MilMap route: check the forecast per day and per region. When weather is uncertain, plan alternative overnight options as waypoints so you can turn to a definitive point in bad weather. The elevation profile indicates at which points you gain the most elevation and therefore have the highest chance of weather changes.
Export for navigation systems
Export your MilMap route as GPX and import into Garmin Zumo, TomTom Rider, or Google Maps for use during the ride. MilMap's route calculation and waypoint precision are excellent, but while riding you preferably use a fixed-mounted system or a phone holder.
