Elevation profile and terrain analysis for mountain expeditions

The elevation change on a route largely determines the walking time and effort. Learn how to use terrain analysis and elevation information in your planning.

Elevation: the underestimated factor

Two routes of equal length can have completely different walking times when one route contains 1,000 metres of ascent. Planners who only look at the horizontal distance systematically make errors in their time estimates.

Elevation profile in MilMap

MilMap automatically calculates the elevation per waypoint based on digital elevation data (SRTM/DEM). The elevation profile displays the altitude across the entire route as a graph, with the elevation difference per segment (ascent and descent separately).

Walking time with elevation correction

MilMap's time calculation accounts for elevation using Naismith's Rule: 1 extra hour per 600 metres of ascent, corrected for the weight of equipment (1st, 2nd, or 3rd line). This provides a realistic estimate of walking time in the field.

Terrain analysis: know your environment

The terrain analysis automatically scans a 5 km radius around each waypoint and identifies relevant features: mountain peaks with elevation and name, bodies of water, cliffs and steep slopes, forested areas, marshes, and glaciers. Each feature contains the name, region, and exact elevation.

Practical applications

Use terrain analysis to: identify evacuation routes (low-lying valleys), find cover (forests, cliffs), locate water sources for longer trips, and mark dangerous areas (glaciers, steep cliffs).

3D view in MilMap

In MilMap's map view you can enable 3D terrain mode. Set the camera angle (0–75° pitch) for a perspective that makes the elevation difference visually apparent. Ideal for presentations and briefings.
