Why 3D terrain matters
A two-dimensional topographic map requires experience to interpret elevation differences. Contour lines tell the story, but for people without extensive map reading experience it is difficult to quickly see how steep a slope is, where ravines lie, or which route really gains the least elevation. MilMap's 3D terrain view makes this immediately visible.
Activating 3D mode
Tap the map layer button at the bottom right and choose 'Terrain 3D'. The map automatically tilts to a perspective of approximately 45 degrees. With two fingers you can adjust the tilt: pinch to zoom, rotate for direction, one finger to pan. Double-tap to return to top view.
Combining the elevation profile with 3D
Select a route and open the elevation profile via the chart icon. The profile shows ascent and descent per segment. In 3D mode the visualised route is laid over the terrain, so you can immediately see where the steepest slopes are. Use this to identify bottlenecks in a march: a steep 300-metre climb over 500 metres horizontal distance doubles the required time.
Tactical applications
In a military context, 3D terrain is indispensable for defilade analysis — determining areas that are not visible from a given position. Mentally walk the route in 3D: which flanks are exposed? Where does the route pass through a narrow valley that is vulnerable? Which ridges provide cover?
Satellite versus topographic in 3D
MilMap supports both topographic and satellite map layers in 3D. Satellite gives a realistic picture of vegetation and terrain surface. Topographic shows contour lines over the terrain model, which is useful for reading steepness. Switch between the two depending on the planning phase.
Exporting 3D analyses
Although the interactive 3D view does not export directly to PDF, you can take screenshots from the ideal angle and add these to your operational briefing document. Combine this with the exported elevation profile for a complete terrain analysis.
