MGRS is not the military standard by accident. In operational conditions every second counts and a wrong position is dangerous. The system is designed to share positions briefly, unambiguously and error-free — even between units from different countries.
One language for position
Within NATO, countries with different languages and systems work together. MGRS gives them one shared way to designate a position. A grid zone, two letters and a series of digits mean the same thing everywhere, no matter who reads the code.
Error-free radio communication
Coordinates are often passed on verbally over the radio. Long strings of numbers (as with pure UTM or degrees) are prone to hearing and reading errors. An MGRS code is shorter and structured, which reduces the chance of mistakes — crucial when, for example, requesting support or a medical evacuation.
Works at every level of detail
From designating an area of operations (few digits) to an exact target point (ten digits): with the same system you scale the precision up or down, without switching notation. That makes MGRS usable in both planning and execution.
From planning to execution
In planning, areas, routes and reference points are recorded in MGRS; in execution, units pass on their position and observations in the same system. Because everything is on the same reference, the map in the command post fits seamlessly with what the people in the field see.
